It seems they have been around for 67 Years (1952) and now are into the 2nd Generation .........

While Malay Cuisine dominates here you will find that Multicutural Malaysia thrive here,and maybe more then in other towns. Many types of cuisines are also available in various Warongs (Stalls), Kedai Kopi (Coffee Shops) & in Restaurants.
Some of the cuisines have been adapted to suit the taste buds, with some of the Food on non malay origin are prepared the traditional methods but with Muslim Friendly methods and ingredients as can be seen with many Kedahan Malay patronize these places. .

Nasi Lemak Royal has many outlets in Kedah, there are those who open for lunch and those that open for dinner. They have also spread their wings with a few branches in Kuala Lumpur.
Nasi Lemak Royal offer "Yellow" rice which is more akin to Nasi Minyak then the traditional Coconut Infuse Rice found around Malaysia, together with Nasi Kandar type of Dishes.
The stories goes, that Nasi Lemak Royal an Alor Setar Icon got its name as its a favorite dish of the Late Sultan from 40 years back.
The Original Nasi Lemak Royal was a Simple Dish of the Yellow Rice, with Fried Chicken, Boiled Egg & Boiled Lady Fingers. Now the verity is much more, Beef, Tiger Prawns, Squid ......
Their Secret to this tasty dish ?, it seems they have 5 types of gravy to serve, Dalcha, Spicy, Soya Sauce, Sambal and Honey, which can be mix and match..........

Fancy at "Specialty" Coffee & Meal at the First Prison of Alor Setar? :).
Cafe Diem is located in a 120 year Heritage Shop House in Pekan Cina Alor Setar, which was the first prison in town which consist of 3 prison cell located on the first floor, After being abandoned for 30 years it was lovingly restored using traditional craftsmanship, while retaining much of its Old World Charm, and designed promote local Arts, Culture & History. Up Stair there the Tengku Room, with the photos of Our First Prime Minister, a Anak Kedah.
On the Ground Floor there a Photo Gallery. A Permanent fixture of the Cafe is the Hanging Perahu Kedah which is believe to be 90 years old, (a traditional boats use for fishing) at the enclose double volume court yard.

The Most Famous Mee Rebus in Alor Setar is definitely "Mee Abu" and their many locations and "franchise"around Alor Setar certainly account for it. ..... You have a option of the Famous Mee Abu, which is the Rebus with Gravy, Pasembore / Rojak as some Call it (Vegetables, Fritters topped with Gravy or the Mee Goreng here.

This is one of the Chinese stalls that is patronize by the Malay Muslim, Delicious Fragrant Curry Mee, right in the Middle of Alor Setar Town Center, in between Wat Siam - Ukir Mall. definately the best in Alor Setar and one of the top Curry Mee in Malaysia . The Topping serve here are Curry Chicken. Do come early as if you drop by at 9am you will be fighting for Seats, and have a longer wait.

Another Legend in Alor Setar, Mr Ong has been dishing out Alor Setar Style "Nasi Lemak" for lunch daily. He started as a small stall within a Kopi Tiam in the Area, and now 20 + years later he operates his own "Restaurant" and have 2 more branches in Kuala Lumpor operated by his children.
Alor Setar Style "Nasi Lemak" is not your standard nasi lemak. Here you will find Yellow Rice (White Rice available) together with various curry and others dishes, similar to Nasi Kandar in other places. For Mr Ong the Unique Touch here to his "Nasi Lemak" is that here you will find Ulam and Sambal (unlike other Nasi Lemak places in Alor Setar).
Head for the Food Counter right in front. the Friendly Mr Ong will be there to scoop up the items you want, and he will customize the gravy to your spice level.
